Zagreb to Dubrovnik, leg by leg

A Croatia road trip by hire car: the legs from Zagreb to Plitvice, Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik, one-way hire between the airports, ferries and the costs.

What route works for a Croatia road trip?

Car hire in Croatia is mostly collected at the airports, and the touring route that uses them best runs from Zagreb to Dubrovnik: Zagreb Airport, Plitvice Lakes, Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik, with Hvar as the island stop, reached on the Hvar ferry from Split. Every leg below is timed without traffic, rounded up to five minutes, and the driving adds up to 10 hours 25 minutes over 696 km, before stops.

Zagreb Airport to Plitvice Lakes, Entrance 1145 km2 hours 20 minutes
Plitvice Lakes to Zadar136 km2 hours 10 minutes
Zadar to Split158 km2 hours
Split to Dubrovnik, over the Pelješac Bridge235 km3 hours 25 minutes
Dubrovnik to Dubrovnik Airport22 km30 minutes

Between city centres, the park entrance and the airports, without traffic or stops, rounded up to five minutes per leg.

Driven straight, Zagreb Airport to Dubrovnik Airport is 7 hours 50 minutes without traffic on the full run to Dubrovnik by the motorway and the bridge. The A1 carries that run as far as Ploče, where the motorway currently ends, and the last stretch crosses the Pelješac Bridge.

How many days do I need for a Croatia road trip?

Count the legs, then the stops. No leg on the route above is longer than 3 hours 25 minutes without traffic, so it splits into one leg a day: Zagreb to the lakes, the lakes to Zadar, Zadar to Split, Split to Dubrovnik. At Plitvice, online tickets are timed to an entry slot at one entrance, so the lakes day is planned around that slot.

Istria is a separate loop. Without traffic, Pula Airport to Zagreb is 3 hours 30 minutes and Pula Airport to Split 6 hours 5 minutes, so it suits a trip of its own rather than a detour from the coast route.

Where should I start my road trip?

At whichever end your flights suit, because the car does not have to come back. A one-way from Zagreb to Dubrovnik had 51 cars for 5 October to 19 October 2026, and the reverse, Dubrovnik to Zagreb, 53. To start in Zagreb is to collect at the airport in almost every case; 76 of 79 Zagreb cars were there.

Starting halfway down is just as possible. From a Zadar pick-up the lakes are 2 hours 15 minutes to Entrance 2 without traffic. A Split pick-up is 35 minutes from the city port, where the car ferry to Hvar takes about 110 minutes each way.

Should we rent one-way instead of a loop?

Compare the drop-off charge with the drive back. On Zagreb to Dubrovnik the typical charge was €125 for 5 October to 19 October 2026, already inside the price shown; the drive back is 7 hours 10 minutes and 605 km without traffic, plus tolls and fuel. Booked as a one-way hire, the trip is one rental, with the charge set per car.

A loop suits a trip that starts and ends at one airport anyway, such as Split, where the lakes are 3 hours 20 minutes from the city centre without traffic and the islands are a ferry ride from the city port.

How do we add islands to a road trip?

By car ferry, arranged in advance with the rental. The rental conditions allow a crossing between the mainland and the islands only with prior arrangement made with customer support before the booking is completed. From Split, Jadrolinija line 635 to Stari Grad takes about 110 minutes and its vehicle ticket reserves the sailing. From Zadar, line 431 crosses to Preko on Ugljan in 25 minutes, boarding in order of arrival.

Car fares depend on the car's length and height, in bands at 5.00 m long and 2.00 m high, and each passenger pays a separate fare.

When is the best time for a road trip?

The A1 is busiest in July and August: in 2025 its average daily traffic was 47,984 in August, 40,948 in July, 27,907 in September and 11,533 in January. September, on those figures, carries a little over half the August traffic.

Winter changes the route. From 15 November to 15 April winter equipment is compulsory on the designated winter sections of public roads, motorways and state and county roads among them; from 1 November to 31 March you drive with daytime running lights or dipped headlights on; and at Plitvice the Upper Lakes usually close for the winter, reopening in early April depending on the weather. The bora, a gusty wind off the mountains, has closed the A1 between Sveti Rok and Posedarje, as on 15 November 2024 and 6 April 2025.

Rental conditions over a long trip

The minimum chargeable period is 24 hours, and if you want to extend the rental you must inform the rental agent in advance. Fuel, parking, tolls and fines are the renter's to pay; on most motorways, until the barrier-free system starts, tolls are paid at barrier plazas with a ticket from the entry plaza, and on HAC motorways a lost ticket costs double the longest-route toll.

How much does a Croatia road trip cost?

The car is priced per day. For a 14-day rental starting three days out, the cheapest daily price listed for a Volkswagen Golf was €37 at Zagreb and €37 at Split on 1 October 2026, and for a Skoda Kodiaq €35 at Zagreb. A one-way adds its drop-off charge, inside the price shown.

On top: motorway tolls by distance and vehicle class, published by HAC for every pair of junctions; fuel; parking, which in Dubrovnik's special traffic zone around the Old Town means a reserved space from 1 March to 30 November. The search shows the price of each car for your dates before you pay.

Can we add neighbouring countries to the trip?

Only with the rental company's permission: the cross-border option is added during booking, for a fee, and the permission is arranged by email with the booking partner's help desk. Croatia's land borders with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro are external Schengen borders, where every traveller and the vehicle are checked on entry and exit. The route on this page never needs one: since 26 July 2022 the Pelješac Bridge takes the coast road to Dubrovnik without crossing Neum.

Frequently asked questions

Should we drive Dubrovnik to Zagreb (south to north)?

Either direction works as a one-way. For 5 October to 19 October 2026, 53 cars were offered from Dubrovnik to Zagreb and 51 from Zagreb to Dubrovnik; search both for your dates.

Is driving in Croatia difficult?

Most motorways are tolled, as of September 2026 with a ticket from the entry plaza; tunnels require dipped headlights, and the alcohol limit for car drivers is 0.5 per mille. The old towns of Split and Zadar are closed to visitors' cars, so you park outside and walk in. From 1 March to 30 November a hire car enters Dubrovnik's Old Town zone only with a prepaid reserved space in one of its two public car parks or with registered parking at accommodation inside it, and the Tourist Board advises parking outside the zone and taking the city buses.

Is a car better than public transport for touring Croatia?

For a route through Plitvice and the coast towns, a car lets you choose the legs and stops; no leg of the route in the table is longer than 3 hours 25 minutes without traffic.
