How long is the drive from Split to Plitvice?
From the centre of Split it is 258 km and 3 hours 20 minutes to Entrance 2 without traffic. From Split Airport it is 3 hours 5 minutes. Two approach roads lead to the park: the D52 from the Otočac exit of the A1, through Vrhovine to Korenica, and the D429, which runs past both entrances.
From Split, the drive to the park alone is 3 hours 20 minutes, before the drive back and any time on the trails. Collecting a car from Split the day before and sleeping near the park, or carrying on north on a one-way, spreads the driving out.
Is Plitvice closer to Split or to Zagreb?
Closer to Zagreb. Without traffic, the drive to the nearest entrance is 2 hours 10 minutes from central Zagreb, 2 hours 10 minutes from central Zadar and 3 hours 20 minutes from central Split. From the airports: 2 hours 15 minutes from Zadar Airport, 2 hours 20 minutes from Zagreb Airport and 3 hours 5 minutes from Split Airport. For a Plitvice-first trip that then heads down the coast, car hire in Zadar starts you as near the lakes as Zagreb does.

Can I do Plitvice as a day trip from Zagreb?
Yes. From Zagreb the state road D1 runs via Karlovac and meets the D429 at Prijeboj, and the D429 runs past both entrances. From Ban Jelačić Square it is 2 hours 10 minutes to Entrance 1 without traffic.
Most Zagreb cars are collected at the airport, and a car from Zagreb collected there is 2 hours 20 minutes from Entrance 1. The park is also reached from the A1 between Zagreb and Split by the D52 from the Otočac exit, so the lakes can be a stop on the drive south rather than a return trip.

Which entrance should I drive to?
The one on your ticket. The park has two main entrances, Entrance 1 at Rastovača to the north and Entrance 2 at Hladovina to the south, about 3 km apart on the D429, plus an auxiliary entrance, Flora, near Entrance 2. Tickets bought online are timed: you choose a date, an entry time and an entrance, and the ticket has to be validated at that entrance in that window. You cannot enter early and may be at most one hour late.
So choose the entrance when you buy the ticket, and park there. The park strongly recommends buying online in advance through its official webshop; tickets are also sold at the entrances unless they have sold out.

Is there free parking at Plitvice?
No. Visitor parking at both main entrances is paid by the hour at seasonal rates the park publishes on its price list, and you settle it at the payment stalls on the way out. Parking is the renter's cost under the rental conditions, like fuel, tolls and fines.
Visiting Plitvice in winter
The water ices over in winter. The Lower Lakes are usually open while the Upper Lakes are closed, usually reopening in early April depending on the weather, and the boat and panoramic train services run a reduced winter schedule that changes each year.
The drive changes too. From 15 November to 15 April winter equipment is compulsory on Croatia's designated winter road sections: four winter tyres, or summer tyres with at least 4 mm of tread plus snow chains for the driven wheels. Check that the car is equipped for the sections your route uses.
Rental conditions for a park day
The D429 and the D52 are state roads, and rental cars are allowed on paved public roads only. The minimum chargeable period is 24 hours, and the car goes back with the fuel level it left with.
Plitvice on a one-way route
On the longer road trip the park sits between Zagreb and the coast, and a one-way hire keeps it there instead of at the end of a return trip: collect in Zagreb, drive to the park and return it elsewhere. For 5 October to 19 October 2026, 53 Zagreb cars could be left in Split and 39 in Zadar, with the drop-off charge in the price shown.
